While DeSoto tap water is generally considered safe to drink, there are a number of unregulated contaminants present that may not exceed federal guidelines. This can includes arsenic, nitrates, radium and other radioactive contamination, as well as TTHMs and other disinfectant byproducts from chlorine or chloramine treatment. In its most recent water quality report, DeSoto self-reported violations. From January 1, 2023 to March 31, 2023, It did not test it’s drinking water for HAA5 and TTHM’s, both major disinfectant byproducts. In the same period, they also did not test their water for nitrates.

The most recent DeSoto water quality report did not list a value for hardness. The most recent documented reading was in the 2021 water quality report, when hardness levels were listed at a range of 294-348 mg/L, which is considered very hard.

Recent sampling conducted at DeSoto water treatment plants detected the presence of PFAS chemicals. The EPA is in the process of setting new MCL (maximum contaminant levels), which range from 4 to 10 parts per trillion. In numbers, that would be 0.00000000004 for PFOA and PFOS, individually to 0.0000000001 for PFNA, PFHxS, and HFPO-DA (GenX Chemicals). According to the most recent water quality report, DeSoto’s drinking water is purchased from the City of Dallas, which obtains its water from the following seven sources: Lake Ray Roberts, Lake Lewisville, Lake Grapevine, Lake Ray Hubbard, Lake Tawakoni, Lake Fork, and the Elm Fork of the Trinity River.
