The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has identified several contaminants in Carrollton’s water supply that exceed their health guidelines, such as arsenic, atrazine (a herbicide used on crops), and chloroform, which is a disinfection byproduct. In August 2022, the City of Carrollton issued a boil water notice after an ATMOS Energy contractor accidentally ruptured a water line at 5th Avenue and Broadway Street.

Recent sampling conducted at Carrollton water treatment plants detected the presence of PFAS chemicals. The EPA is in the process of setting new MCL (maximum contaminant levels), which range from 4 to 10 parts per trillion. In numbers, that would be 0.00000000004 for PFOA and PFOS, individually to 0.0000000001 for PFNA, PFHxS, and HFPO-DA (GenX Chemicals).
